Encoders are digital ICs used for encoding. By encoding, we mean generating a digital binary code for every input. An Encoder IC generally consists of an Enable pin which is usually set high to indicate the working. It consists of 2^n input lines and n output lines with each input line being represented by a code of zeros and ones which are reflected at the output lines.
Decoders are digital ICs which are used for decoding. In other words, the decoders decrypt or obtain the actual data from the received code, i.e. convert the binary input at its input to a form, which is reflected at its output. It consists of n input lines and 2^n output lines. A decoder can be used to obtain the required data from the code or can al...

Introduction to Digital Electronics:
Digital electronics is the field of electronics that deals with digital signals.
It means the signal which is processed or generated using the electronic circuits is digital in nature. Smartphones, personal computer, and many communication equipments which we are using in our day to day life are the example of it.
Analog Signal vs. Digital Signal
An Analog signal is the type of signal whose amplitude can take any value in the given range. Most of the naturally occurring signals are analog in nature. For example, voice signal, temperature, pressure signal are examples of analog signals.
Digital signals are the ones whose amplitude can take only finite values in the given range.
Virtually all the modern digital circuits which we know are working on two voltage levels. High Voltage level (often referred as Logic High) and Low Voltage level (often referred as logic low).
Since the digital circuits are working with only two discrete voltage levels, the digital inputs and outputs can be represented using the binary number system
Advantages of Digital System over Analog System:
1. Digital Signal is immune to noise and interference
2. The digital data is easy to store, replicate, and process
3. Digital systems are more accurate and reliable than analog systems
4. Compared to an analog system, digital systems are easily scalable
5. Currently, the digital circuits are much easy to fabricate and it is also possible to fabricate them in larger density
Most of the naturally occurring signals are analog in nature. To process them in the digital domain,
first, it needs to be converted into a digital signal. Using analog to digital converter, it is possible to convert the analog signal into a digital signal. And if required then using Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) it is possible to convert the digital signal back into the analog signal.

Logic Gates: The basic building block of digital circuits
The logic gates are the basic building block of digital circuits. Using these logic gates various logic functions can be implemented. In general, digital circuits can be classified as either combinational circuits or sequential circuits.
In combinational circuits, the output of the circuit depends on the present input to the circuit, while in the sequential circuit, the output of the circuit depends on the present inputs as well as the past outputs. Using a sequential circuit it is possible to store the digital data. The flip-flop is a very basic sequential circuit that can store one bit of information. Combining various flip-flops, it is possible to design more complex sequential circuits.
This video will be helpful to all the students of science and engineering in understanding the basics of Digital Electronics.

Difference between Analog Electronics and Digital Electronics
Electronics is the branch of engineering which deals with the study of devices that function due to the movement of electrons. Based on types of signals used and voltage or current or power ratings, the electronics can be broadly classified into following categories viz.
Analog Electronics
Digital Electronics
Power Electronics
In this post, we will take a close look at analog electronics and digital electronics and the major differences between them by considering various parameters like definition, type of signal used, current voltage rating, applications, etc.
What is Analog Electronics?
Analog electronics is the branch of electronics that deals with the electronic systems and devices with the continuous time signals. The term ‘analog or analogue’ describes a proportional relationship between a signal and an electrical quantity (voltage or current) that represents the signal.
Basically, the term ‘analogue’ is a Greek word whose meaning is ‘proportional’. The analog electronics is extensively used in many electronic applications where the signals are derived from analog sensors such as in FM radios, TVs, telephones, etc. However, the analog electronics is more susceptible for noise and distortion.
In analog electronics, two types of components are used to design the systems which are: the active elements such as diode, transistors, etc. and the passive elements such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, etc.
What is Digital Electronics?
The field of electronics engineering which involves the study of electronic systems that uses digital signals or discrete time signals is called digital electronics.
Digital electronics systems are usually made from a combination of logic gates, often packaged in an integrated circuit (IC). The digital electronics uses binary logic function to perform operations, the basic mean of binary logic function is that it has only two states ‘active high’ and ‘active low’.
Digital electronics uses active components only. One of the most common application of digital electronics is in computers.

What is Sequential Circuit?
The Sequential Circuit is a type of digital circuit where the output of the circuit depends on the current inputs, as well as the past sequence of inputs.
And since the output depends on the past inputs, this Sequential Circuit also has a memory element.
In this video, the block diagram of the Sequential Circuit has been explained using the example.
Types of Sequential Circuits:
There are two types of Sequential Circuits
1) Synchronous Sequential Circuits
2) Asynchronous Sequential Circuits
Asynchronous Sequential Circuits:
The Asynchronous Sequential Circuits respond to the change in the input immediately.
In these circuits, the memory element within the circuit responds to the change in the input immediately.
Synchronous Sequential Circuits:
In these circuits, the memory element within the circuit responds to change in the input only at the discrete-time intervals. The output state of the memory element changes as per the clock signal.
The Synchronous Sequential Circuits can be further classified into two types:
1) Edge Triggered
2) Level Triggered
Level Triggered Sequential Circuits:
In these circuits, the memory element within the circuit responds to the input, when the clock level goes high. (or low). These circuits are sensitive to the clock level.
Edge Triggered Sequential Circuits:
In these circuits, the memory element within the circuit responds to the input during the clock transition. (At the rising or the falling edge of the clock signal)
In this video, the basics of the Sequential Circuit and its different aspects are explained in detail.
This video will be helpful to all the students of science and engineering in understanding the basics of the Sequential Circuits.

A half adder is a type of adder, an electronic circuit that performs the addition of numbers. The half adder is able to add two single binary digits and provide the output plus a carry value. It has two inputs, called A and B, and two outputs S (sum) and C (carry). The common representation uses a XOR logic gate and an AND logic gate.

In this video, the Binary Encoder circuit is explained in detail. This video explains the working, the applications, the logic circuit of the Encoder, and the limitations of the normal binary encoder.
By watching this video, you will learn the following topics:
0:00 What is Encoder?
1:02 4 to 2 Encoder
2:38 8 to 3 Encoder (Octal to Binary Encoder)
4:40 Applications of Enocder
6:46 Decimal to BCD Encoder
9:01 Limitations of Encoder

What is Binary Encoder:
The binary encoder is the combinational circuit which converts the input binary information into the compact binary code. The Encoder has N outputs and 2^N or fewer inputs. Its working is exactly opposite to the Decoder.
For the normal binary encoder, it has been assumed that only one input is high at any given time.
And depending on the particular high input, the. the Encoder generates the N-bit code at the output.
Depending on the number of inputs and output we have different types of Encoders.
4 Line to 2 Line Encoder, 8 to 3 Encoder (Octal to Binary Encoder) are the few examples of the Binary Encoder.
Limitations of Binary Encoder:
1) If more than one inputs are high then the output of the Binary Encoder is invalid.
2) When all inputs of the Encoder are zero, or when the first input of the Encoder is high then the output of the encoder is same. (All N output bits are 0). In other words, for two different input conditions, the output of the encoder is same.
These two limitations can be eliminated using the priority encoder.
This video will be helpful to all the students of science and engineering in understanding the binary encoder and its working and applications.

A decoder can be used to obtain the required data from the code or can also be used for obtaining the parallel data from the serial data received.
